“You have heard it said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ [Ecodus 20:14, Deuteronomy 5:18] Whereas I tell you that everyone looking at a married woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. So if your right eye causes you to falter, remove it and fling it away from you, for it is better for you that one member of your body should perish rather than your whole body should be through into the Valley of Hinnom. And if your right hand causes you to falter, cut it off and fling it away from you, for it is better for you that one of the members of your body should perish rather than your whole body depart into the Valley of Hinnom. (Matthew 5:27-30)

Marriage & Adultry

“Moreover, it has been said, ‘Whoever dismisses his wife must provide her with a divorce certificate.’ [Deuteronomy 24:1, 3] But I tell you that everyone who dismisses his wife, except in the cases of whorishness, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever weds a wife who has been dismissed commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those in ancient times, ‘You shall not swear oaths falsely,’ and ‘You shall render up to the Lord whatever your oaths are sworn upon.’ [Levetics 19:12, Numbers 30:2, Deuteronomy 23:21] But I tell you not to swear at all, neither by heaven as it’s God’s throne, nor by the earth as it’s God’s footstool, nor by Jerusalem as it is the Great King’s city [Psalms 48:2], nor by your own head as you cannot make a single hair white or black. Rather let your word be ‘Yes, yes,’ or ‘No, no,” because it is only from the wicked man that anything more extravagant that this comes.” (Matthew 5:31-37)

Enemy Treatment

“You have heard it said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ [Exodus 21:24, Leviticus 24:20, Deuteronomy 19:21] But I tell you not to oppose the wicked man by force, rather whosoever strikes you upon the right cheek, turn to him and the other. And to him who wishes to bring a suit against you so that he might take away your tunic, give him your cloak as well. And whoever presses you into service for one mile, go with him for two. Give to the one who asks or begs from you, and do not turn away from the one who wishes to borrow from you or takes your things. You have heard that it has been said, ‘You shall love your neighbor [Leviticus 19:18] and shall hate your enemy.’ But I tell you who hear me, love your enemies and speak well of those who revile you, do well to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who abuse and persecute you. In this way, you may become sons of your Father in the heavens, for he makes his sun rise on the wicked and the good and sends rain upon the just and the unjust.” (Matthew 5:38-45, Luke 6:27-30)

“If you love those who love you, what reward will you have? For even sinners and tax collectors love those who love them. Even if you do good to those who do good to you, what is your thanks? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those you hope to receive, what thanks have you? Even sinners lend to sinners so that they may receive an equal return. Or if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing that is extraordinary? Don’t the Gentiles do the same? But love your enemies, do good, and lend without despair. Your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be perfect and become compassionate, just as your Father is perfect and compassionate.” (Luke 6:32-36, Matthew 5:56-48)
