Roles Of Man & Woman

Many times religious people have various discussions on the roles of man and woman (humans). And it’s a good discussion. It’s essential to figure it out. We, as a culture, have many ideas passed down through generations on the subject of males and females and how to treat each other, what is expected from each other, etc. We have different social rules regarding the sexes and what is and what is not appropriate. So, trying to determine from scripture what the original intent of these two different genders is, is a fair question and one that will take some time.

Consider if you are preparing for marriage. You found a guy or gal you are smitten with and are trying to figure out if they are a fittable souter. A question regarding the roles of a man or woman might come up. Or maybe you are involved in a church where women are allowed to teach boys under the age of 12, but once they turn 13 a man must teach them, and something doesn’t seem right, but you don’t know what it is. Say that in the heals of the feminist woke movement, men are being told women are equal, and they are to be paid the same, treated the same, and, maybe even owed more due to their long period of suppression. Are either of two things true?

How Did God Create Humans?

Gen 1:26-27

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” 27 So God created manin his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female.

At first glance, this seems pretty straightforward. God created man in His image. And in His image, He created male and female. To even overanalyze this to make sure we understand the complete and most precise picture here, what does the Bible mean when it says “man,” “male,” and “female.”

Do you get it? Have we overanalyzed this already? When God created the entire essence of mankind, they did so in one way. He split his image into two separate genders, male and female, to bear His Image.

But Which Human Is More Valuable?

That is the crass question we want the answer to, correct? As a society, we need to know what sex is the most valuable to God. Then we can assign a level of fairness to the hierarchy to help make decisions. Isn’t that right? Well, the Bible addresses the creation of males and females again to ensure we are getting it.

Genesis 5:1-2

1 This is the document containing the family records of Adam. On the day that God created man (adam), he made him in the likeness of God; 2 he created them male (zakar) and female (neqebah). When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind (adam).

Recorded for a second time, God created both male and female in his likeness. If you will liberally allow, God split himself perfectly into two genders: male and female. How could one argue that one is more valuable, more important, deserving, rational, intelligent, or perfect?

Did God Make A Mistake?

The Bible is clear. God made both men and women function as His image-bearer. They are to be the image of God. Both of them, together and combined create a complete image of God. Neither is better, more significant, more valued, or more perfect. Apart, they bear the image of God, and together they bear the image of God. Humans are God’s image.
